Wellington is set to experience an electrifying local start to its newest live music venue, Meow Nui, with the announcement of two debut performances by the internationally acclaimed band, Drax Project. These shows will be the final stop on the band’s “Upside Album Tour” which has also seen them play throughout Australia, before shows in Auckland, Christchurch, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam and two sold out shows at London's legendary Jazz Cafe - where they follow in the footsteps of the likes of D'Angelo in recording a live album - set for release later this year.
Hitting the stage on Friday Nov 1 and Saturday Nov 2, these two special headline shows will mark the first ever events at this intriguing new venue for the city.
Meow Nui is brought to you by Damian Jones and Rahine O’Rielly, the family behind Meow, Wellington’s longest-running independent music venue. Meow Nui stands out as a 1000-person capacity, plug-and-play venue managed by a team with over sixteen years of experience in the local music, arts, and culture communities and the broader New Zealand and Australian entertainment sectors.
Just a short walk from Cuba Street or Courtney Place, Meow Nui is housed inside the award-winning Citadel building, originally designed for the Salvation Army by Warren and Mahoney Architects and completed in 1990. Boasting a spacious interior, including a mezzanine level, advanced acoustics, and a vibrant atmosphere Meow Nui’s goal is to continue hosting amazing shows in Wellington while supporting the music, arts, and culture communities surrounding them.
Drax Project, known for their unique blend of pop, R&B, and jazz influences rapidly ascended to international note with hits like "Woke Up Late", “Catching Feelings” and "Firefly", released through 300, Syco and Universal. Now signed to EMI, the band's energetic performances and dynamic stage presence have garnered a loyal fan base worldwide. Their choice to headline Meow Nui's inaugural shows underscores the venue's A venue of this size is overdue in Wellington and we’re super stoked to be christening Meow Nui’s stage.
